Canaan Valley Half/10K/5K FAQ's
The Course Time Limit is 4 hours for the Half Marathon with a cutoff of 12:00pm (3.5 hours) at Mile 12 off of the golf course
We love dogs, we really do, but this time we ask that you leave your pooch at home. Due to the number of runners we are expecting we cannot allow dogs on the course.
While we do not fully ban headphones, they are highly discouraged due to some skinny sections on course and potential vehicular traffic. Our start line music can be heard from half the course and will keep you motivated!
In the case of inclement weather we reserve the right to ask you not to wear headphones as the spring weather in Canaan can bring quick storms and we may need to give instructions both in person and through PA announcements. This is for all participants’ safety.
Yes strollers are allowed on the course, but please be considerate of other runners and start at the back of the corral as from the start of the race there is a steep downhill.
Note: The course has a few sustained hills; the 5K is entirely road, the 10K is road with golf cart path, but the Half Marathon has two half-mile hilly dirt road sections that may not be ideal for strollers.

Although the race team loves running with our dogs too, due to the tightness of the course and open road, dogs are not allowed on course. They are very welcome to hang out at the camp, though!
Strollers are welcome – please start at the back of the corral.
Runners are expected to stay to the left and follow Race Director instructions. We heavily discourage the use of headphones due to this and safety reasons – enjoy the quiet mountain air!
Moonlight on the Falls has a strict no refunds policy. We have a generous transfer and deferral policy covering only our incurred costs, so you are more than welcome to transfer your registration to a friend or family member or defer until the following year (see policies and steps above for this).
Yes you may change the distance that you registered for through 8/19 – we do not offer refunds for dropping a distance, and you simply pay the price difference to add the race. If you decide to drop the distance during race week, please let us know at Packet Pickup – we may be able to accommodate you fully or partially depending on the number of bibs and other materials.
However, due to the loop nature of the course, you can simply run a shorter number of laps and please let the timer know if you do.

Please see the race page for most up-to-date information:
We provide water stops on course for a total of 3 hits per lap, plus a 4th at the finish when you turnaround.
There is a bathroom at the turnaround aid station (approximately 3 miles from the finish).
There is also a bathroom at the Blackwater Falls parking lot that will be signed – a quick detour when running in either direction.
We also encourage all runners to set up their own ‘personal aid station’ in the 100 yards before/after the finish line.
Please see the race page for most information – parking will be available first-come on the northern road to the site.
We highly encourage Lodge and southern cabin guests to take the shuttle, which leaves the lodge late afternoon and repeats until 9pm and again after finishers begin to come in. More information will be posted closer to race date.
Starting in 2023 and continuing in 2024, Distance Challenge runners (solo and team) may park and set up anywhere in the pulloffs and picnic sites along the section of the course between the main entrance and the finish line (first/last mile), if they agree not to move their vehicle until ‘towards the end of the race’. This is on the honor system and we will continue to allow it as long as the course remains safe during the race.
Overnight weather is generally dry and cool with temperatures going down into the 50’s. Layer accordingly – with multiple laps you can always drop things off.
ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A REFLECTIVE VEST OR SIMILAR GEAR AND A HEADLAMP. The roads in the park are closed at night to outside traffic and anyone not staying in the park, however, for safety purposes, we will require runners to wear a “reflective vest” and have a headlamp. The rules on this are not hard and fast but You Must Be Able to See and Be Seen. Have fun with your lighting; glow sticks and other fun lighting for your outfits are highly encouraged!
Shops tend to close early in Davis – come out for the day! See our race page for things to do and places to go.
Our Facebook Group is the best place to go to discuss accommodation, the race, and other participants’ experience. It’s a place we generally post quick updates before we have the time or completion to put them on our website. Lastly, as it’s monitored by a few staff on race week, it may also be the quickest way to get an answer from us.
Race Day Packet Pickup tends to get a rush in the first hour with people coming and going when they get into town – we recommend coming a little later and hanging out for the party.
This is a “STAY LEFT” course – overnight park guests however few may be driving on the road. You will be expected to comply with any and all instructions for your own safety and that of runners, so headphones are not recommended especially during the first 1-2 hours of the race.
